Machida Karate-Do Book Review part 2

Right leg front kick
Rear Front kick to Lunge-step Jab

The next technique I will cover is the Rear Front Kick to Lunge-step Jab.  This allows you to see the complexity of Lyoto's foot work and learn why he is a very elusive fighter.

This technique will start from the orthodox fighting stance (left foot forward) shown previously.  Next transfer your weight to your lead leg as you bring the heel of your right leg to your buttock.  Keep your shoulders square as you lift your right knee toward your chest.  While your knee is elevated extend your right leg toward your opponents midsection.  Remember to flex your toes and drive the ball of your foot into your opponent's abs.  Also, when extending your leg try to do this as fast as you can without compromising your balance so you don't conflict with the flow of the combo.

After successfully landing the strike bring your leg back towards your body.  Then step with the kicking leg to the outside of your opponents lead leg.  This will inhibit them from throwing any counters from their left side.  With your weight still transferring to your right leg, unleash you right jab so you can get your body's momentum behind your punch to produce maximum force.  Now that you have landed your jab you will pivot away from your opponent to create an angle.  This combo ends with you in the south paw stance (right foot forward) with a 45 degree angle that gives you an advantage for your next attack.

After the Pivot

With the angle you created from the pivot, you have several avenues of attack you could now unleash.  You could go for a rear leg round kick to your opponents body, head, or leg.  You could also close the distance and secure a double under body lock.  You could use this to send your opponent on a trip to the sky and then help them plummet to the ground.  The main things is to be creative and you will be able to find a lot of techniques that will work with your style.
